Back then, leashes were actually imposed by resorts as a way to control the rowdy new snowboarders — a futile attempt to “tame” the wild snowboard culture that only added fuel to its growth. As snowboarding transformed into an industry, the once easygoing, fun-centered vibe often gave way to sponsorships and a “too cool” attitude. By the early 2000s, instead of high fives on the slopes, riders exchanged indifferent looks. The sport’s roots in fun and freedom felt like they were being left behind.
