Dominic Palarchio has logged a decade of Michigan Street Snowboarding with his newest video, "Character Motive". I remember Dominic as a young ripper at the local rail jams, then drawing heavy influence from the "Sooner Or Later" crew (Cameron Strand, Marie Hucal, Kevin Castanheira, etc). Earning a spot on Burton Knowbuddy's crew while still in high school and eventually landing with Public Snowboards. Dominic has a drive that is rare. He has an exacting vision and the skills both on and off the board, to bring it to life. While his fine arts sculpting career is blossoming and he is busy with gallery shows, he still found the time to make "Character Motive" last winter. Not because he is chasing...
Trevor Newman has been one of the most consistent and valuable assets to Michigan Snowboarding for well over a decade. Always pushing the visual and riding to new levels. "Germination" is his newest work and may be one of the best yet. He perfectly captures the the gritty quiet of the post-industrial snowboard playscape that make the Michigan streets one of a kind. From the well curated spots to the beautiful b-roll that transports you to their moment. Telling the story of the day in a few seconds. Trev has it figured out. He knows how to recap a season and tell the story and we are all grateful for that. Riders in order of appearance: Trevor Newman Jack...
~ People, like my previous snowboarding films, attempts to end complacency of the genre’s conventions. While paying to snowboard at a resort can be viewed as bourgeois, street snowboarding has always been a reinterpretation of the built environment. I’m interested in taking that thought a step further by incorporating outside influences. Through careful curation we selected a majority of dilapidated post industrial locations in the rust belt cities of Detroit, Flint, Grand Rapids, and Kalamazoo. Visual acts of snowboarding thus can begin to represent the regrowth of these areas plagued by late-capitalism. Most notable of the selection is a modernist ‘adventure park’ designed by acclaimed architect Richard Dattner. Once a symbol of progress it reflected the children’s interests rather than...
This past Saturday People Skate and Snowboard held a Winter Waves Snow Surf Contest and Rail jam at Alpine Valley and it could not have gone better. Tons of rippers and friends made their way to Alpine Valley from all over the state to shred with us.
Dominic Palarchio dropped a heater edit that might mark the moment when you look forward to snow again! Riding your snowboard is a means of communication. You can speak with your riding. Have a voice. A style. Inspire others. Get them to see the landscape differently and create. No one rides street in a bubble. It takes a crew and communication is key. Everyone around here knows this was a challenging season, the snow just did not cooperate and street riding took a crazy amount of commitment and willingness to drop everything and shovel as much snow together to make something out of nothing. To do so takes Communication with your crew. You don't just accidentally get shots when you...
